Informed Consent with Children in Play Therapy

Overview:
Informed consent procedures with the parents of play therapy clients seem relatively straightforward. However, informing children about the play therapy process can be difficult. This presentation will discuss the current legal status of informed consent and children in Texas; what ethical codes say about informed consent, and possible clinical implications of how we start play therapy with our clients.

Play Therapy Attitude, Knowledge and Skills: The impact of play therapy training on graduate students’ views of themselves

Overview:
Child-centered play therapy (CCPT) provides the foundation for many play therapy training programs. In this presentation, participants will consider how simply learning and practicing the basic components of CCPT can shape one’s view of self and of the child’s world. Based upon recent research using the Play Therapy Attitude-Knowledge-Skills Survey (PTAKSS), the participants will develop a greater understanding for how the process of learning CCPT concepts influences one’s view of children and one’s confidence when using play therapy skills in applied settings. Further discussion will provide guidelines for helping students integrate the ideas of CCPT with previously held beliefs and offering effective supervision to those new to CCPT concepts .
